Leadership Institute

In 2023, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Public Health Training Center (MAR-PHTC) launched the inaugural cohort of Soaring to New Heights: The MAR-PHTC Public Health Leadership Institute.

Designed as a 6-month institute for professionals who wish to grow in leadership roles in either the public health or primary care setting, participants work in multidisciplinary teams on real-world, action-oriented, ‘change leader’ projects. The Leadership Institute’s focus on bridging disciplinary boundaries between public health and primary practice aims to reach the goal of improving population health. Drawing on expertise from across MAR-PHTC’s network, the Leadership Institute affords participants a deep and immersive learning experience including topics such as change management, continuous quality improvement, systems-level thinking, community engagement, advocacy, policy development, communications, financial literacy, health equity, and strategic planning.

Learning Objectives
Primary practice and public health emerging leaders will apply adaptive leadership to jointly advance health equity. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate a personal and organizational leadership style that is informed by an equity lens;
  • create change management strategies that derive from working with collaborators and involve multiple perspectives;
  • design a systems-level thinking approach to strategic planning, policy development, and community engagement; and
  • apply persuasive communication strategies with professional and lay audiences to collaboratively address a public health challenge.

Target Audience
The MAR-PHTC Public Health Leadership Institute is for those working in public health or primary care in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., or West Virginia. Students are admitted by application only
