March–June, Foundations of Online Learning – webinar series

These interactive micro-learn workshops are designed to introduce content experts to the world of asynchronous online learning. Participants will learn foundational concepts in online learning including accessibility and universal design, creating measurable learning objectives, course development rubrics, and principles of adult education. The webinars will be 10–15 minutes with time for Q&A. Participants are encouraged to have their video and microphone on so we can engage in discussions around these topics. We welcome you to join us for the entire series or for individual webinars!

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this series, participants will be able to:

  • create accessible learning artifacts;
  • align learning objectives with instructional activities, assessments, and evaluation;
  • discuss online training development rubrics; and
  • identify key motivations for adult learners.

Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning, March 12, 2024
Making content in online trainings and courses accessible is important because it provides access to a wide range of learners. It is also required by law. This webinar will discuss different ways to create accessible learning artifacts. It will also describe Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and ways in which UDL can make courses accessible to a wide range of learners.

  • discuss the importance of making content accessible;
  • create accessible learning artifacts; and
  • describe Universal Design for Learning.

Creating Measurable Learning Objectives, April 9, 2024
Learning objectives or competencies describe what learners will be able to do upon completion of a course. It is important to include measurable learning objectives at both the course level and at the module level. These objectives should align with the instructional techniques, activities, and assessments in the course.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • create learning objectives that use action verbs according to Blooms Taxonomy; and
  • align learning objectives to program level outcomes and assessments.

Online Training Development Rubrics, May 14, 2024
This webinar will go over the Quality Matters, Public Health Navigator, and CDC online course development rubrics. Participants will discuss the similarities and differences in these rubrics and how they can assist with course design.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • identify the eight standards on the Quality Matters CE Rubric; and
  • align their workshop instructional materials, activities, and assessments.

Principles of Adult Education, June 11, 2024
This webinar will introduce participants to principles of adult education. We will discuss key differences between andragogy (adult learning) and pedagogy (child learning) and ways to tailor workshops for adult learning.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • identify the key motivating factors for adult learners; and
  • tailor instructional content for adult learners.

Target Audience
This series is appropriate for any content expert who is interested in teaching in the online space. While the focus of these webinars is on asynchronous online content, these principles apply to synchronous online and face-to-face learning.

Instructor

Melissa Kaufman, EdD
is the Interim Associate Dean for Education and Executive Director of Instructional Design and Educational Operations at the Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University. There she oversees the school’s online programs as well as curriculum development and assessment, including developing new programs and ensuring all programs meet accreditation standards. Kaufman earned her EdD in education leadership and management from Drexel University. She has presented at numerous conferences including the 2023 Quality Matters National Conference and the 2022 UPCEA Conference. She has also published articles in the Journal of Health Administration Education and the Journal of Educators Online.
